I went on a shopping spree today! So happy.. Haven't shopped so much in a long time... Went to buy new clothes for Chinese New Year..

I went to iora, spent $120+ on 3 blouses and 1 skirt.. >_<.. (even clothes have inflation).. But managed to pick up a few good deals later on.. Bought a dress from Zara for $39.90 (sale item).. And bought a mahjong table from Giant for $39.90 too! (with free mahjong set!).. Hahaha.. happy.. Think got quite a lot of good sales around.. Few days ago just bought a pair of shoes from Novo for $20+..

Now I'm ready for the new year..! ^_^.. Last time I'm getting ang pows.. boo..

The importance of good service

I've decided to balance my cynical blog with some of my happy encounters recently..

Good service encounter #1: Seletar Broadway
Went to this bridal studio near my school.. Just to see see look look.. Asked this guy (Mr Phua) about their wedding package.. He was extremely professional, at the same time quite qing1 qie4.. He seems pretty experienced in the line and answered all our questions without making us feel like idiots (unlike the HDB customer service officer - that's another story for another time).. My fiance was so impressed with his service that he paid deposit and signed for their package on the spot.

Good service encounter #2: River View Hotel
Was considering this hotel for our wedding banquet.. The lady there was really nice - brought us to visit the suite, the ballroom.. Showed us pictures.. invited us to the cafe, offered us a drink while she explained the details of the wedding package.. Gave us complimentary parking ticket... (If you think these are quite basic, you'll be surprised to know there are hotels out there who do not provide such services!)

Good service encounter #3: Furama City Centre
Basically did everything that the River View Hotel lady did.. On top of that, they were super efficient with replying emails! Every time I had a question, I drop them an email and by the next working day, they would have responded.. Very happy with their service.. In the end we make our booking with them.

Good service encounter #4: Waraku Pasta (or something like tat) at Central
Went there for dinner yesterday.. I was impressed by how observant and xi4 xin1 the waiters/waitresses there were.. There were 5 of us, 3 asked for warm water, 2 asked for cold.. They served us our water in similar glasses.. But throughout the dinner, the waitress actually remembered who was drinking cold water and who was drinking warm water and refilled accordingly.. At the table next to me, the girl finished her pasta and started on a side dish.. the waitress went up to her an offered her a new set of utensils.. Then we ordered 4 pasta + 1 pizza.. All the pasta came but the pizza didn't come.. We just started eating first.. After some time, a waiter came to us and asked if our pizza was here yet.. We said no and he went to the kitchen to check for us..

So.. I think not bad lah, Singapore still has SOME good service.. hoho... And I realize if you want people to put their money with you, good service is a MUST!

UOB suxs

I'm SUPER pissed with UOB!!

Last month (Dec 2007), I received a note at the back of my UOB Signature Card bill stating "Kindly redeem your existing Signature UNI$ by 31 Jan 2008, thereafter, all remaining Signaure UNI$ will be converted to UNI$ and will retain the same value."

When I logged on to the UOB rewardplus website in January 2008, I found that the whole section for Signature UNI$ redemption was taken down!

I called the customer service and they informed me that UOB changed their reward programme in 2008. In the 2008 reward programme, all the rewards for Signature UNI$ have beeen removed.

So why did UOB tell customers to redeem our Signature UNI$ by 31 January 2008, when they were going to remove all the Signature UNI$ rewards after 31 December 2007? Should they not have told us to make our redemption by 31 December 2007?

That's not all.. When I first signed the Ladies' platinum, they say I'm entitled to Privilege banking. Recently I went to the bank, they say there's no more privilege banking..! Now privilege banking is for some other card (which I think won't last long, they will probably change to yet another card after some time..)

Angry!! Never knew UOB is so jian4! Used to think they are quite good.. Looks like it's time to switch credit card.. NEVER signing with UOB again!

Anyway I also heard from my friend who works at UOB that they are now hiring Filipinos to handle call centres.. When a bank goes to such extents to cut cost, I wonder if it's still safe to put my money with them..! -_-

Rising cost of living

Recently I find the cost of living is ridiculous.. to the extent I'm seriously thinking if Singapore is a place to stay..

Petrol is so freaking expensive.. the last time I topped up my 40l tank, it cost $70..! It used to cost $50 max..

On top of that, there are so many new ERP gantries erected.. the one at Dairy farm particularly irritates me.. So if I need to go to school at around 8am.. either I pay the stupid ERP, so I go the long way via Mandai and pay more for petrol.. either ways sucks..

Then a simple grocery trip to NTUC is also becoming more expensive.. luncheon meat, chrysanthemum tea, maggi mee.. all the prices went up..!

Go to coffee shop to eat mee pok.. price increase by 50cents.. coz apparently price of flour has gone up..

Buy house.. when I first started looking in July, 4-room near Yishun MRT value was around 200k.. in Sept rose to about 215k.. Now November, value is 233k already..! Guess I should count myself lucky, managed to buy a 4-room for 240k based on Sept pricing.. Only 7k above valuation now.. (If you have been following property prices recently, 7k above valuation is a steal!)

But now need to renovate the house.. apparently it's expensive to renovate now coz SAND is expensive.. ARGH!!!

Worst of all.. my pay is remaining stagnant until Aug next year.. >_<

So forgive me for being a 'quitter' who lacks any patriotism.. I'm a practical person who does my sums and Singapore just does not add up to be a place to live..

So many of my friends are leaving, or have left the country.. makes me wonder why I'm still here..

My mum just emailed back from China, saying things there very cheap (less than S$1 for a hair cut).. I told her to cut her hair, dye her hair, do whatever before coming back.. need anything buy from there then ship it back.. coz the things here are too freaking expensive.. Think my parents will get a shock when they return, after spending 3 months in China..

Listening to 93.3FM now.. Heard this conversation between the DJ and a JC student who called in..

DJ: How old are you?
Caller: 18
DJ: So you should be studying for your exams now?
Caller: Yes
DJ: So have you been studying all day? Or do you prefer to study at night?
Caller: I study at night, I go to school in the afternoon.
DJ: Isn't it holidays now?
Caller: I go back for consultation
DJ: Consultation?? What's that??

Reminds me of my student days.. When I was in JC, consultations were unheard of.. Nobody went to look for teachers, we all just studied ourselves or with our friends..

But nowadays, consultation seems to have become the norm.. Though I'm not quite sure if it's the school or the time that made the difference..

All I can say is that i had a very bad culture shock when I entered my current school..

Oh well.. 2.5 years has passed..
Haven't updated my journal in a long time..!

Anyway decided to update today coz today is a good day..!

This week I was sick the whole week.. I'm so upset! I was looking forward to enjoying my National day long holiday, but ended up falling sick.. so just spent my days sleeping and eating medicine.. >_<...

Today I went to uncle's house for sort-of family gathering.. Saw Yanming, whom I haven't seen in ages.. Caught up with her, so quite happy.. Then found out that a cousin of mine is into toy business.. His website is super cute.. Everyone, if you like cute stuff, please support: www.miniartmuseum.com .. Getting some good business ideas.. Just need to wait for my bond to finish..!

Oh yah, apparently I got pay increment.. My take home has finally exceed 3k!! Ahahaa... so happy... But then again, I shouldn't be happy.. Coz now I confirm can't get direct HDB flat and can't apply HDB loan coz we've exceeded income ceiling! Government is like STINGY.. And resale market nowadays is terrible.. all asking at least 40-50k above valuation! =(

Nevertheless, went to view flats today.. Finally saw a flat I like..! It's the first one I like after seeing so many.. (Actually not a lot lah.. Only the 6th house I've viewed).. Nice decor, corner unit, 8th floor, near MRT / shopping centre, facing N/S so won't get sun.. Only hope that the offer is not out of our budget.. (Don't want to spend the rest of my life in debt! >_<)..

My new-found aspiration: I want to own my own house and be my own boss! =D

Saw many people I haven't seen for ages.. Fellow schoolmates from Nanyang / Hwachong... Gosh, I miss my school days so much...!! And I feel so guilty when I saw Jason Tan, Shuxun and Wenkang, coz they all SMSed me during my birthday last year but I didn't reply.. =P... Think I haven't seen them since my NIE days.. Anyway we took a photo together at the wedding.. But I don't have it, so can't post it here..

Anyway I miss school and i miss studying..
I'm amused by the article in today's Straits Times about the Project Work results.. Apparently it's an ongoing problem that MOE never resolved but we still continue to have PW year after year and have students / teachers / parents complain year and year and all MOE says is that all the proper processes are in place and still when results are released, the discrepancy is still there year after year.. Oh well..

Anyway I have no envy for PW STs in colleges who work so hard but end up with negligible number of As.. Neither do I have envy for PW STs who have to mark 5 drafts to ensure their students get their As for PW.. Basically being a PW ST is a sucky job.. you are never right.. When you over-spoon feed your students, you get scolded for going against the 'educational value of PW'.. If you don't, your students don't get the As and you get scolded by the media, the principal, and worst, by your own students..

There's a line in the article that I totally agree.. "Anything more than 3 drafts is the teacher's work".. At the end of the day, we're marking our own students' work (for GPF).. If we keep helping our students to draft and draft, we'll finally end up marking our own work.. So ridiculous.. This is what I call 自编自导自演 ..

Don't mistake me, I don't entirely hate PW or dread being a PW ST.. Actually being a PW ST is quite fun.. I quite enjoy going for PW lessons, discussing ideas with the students and reading through my students' (ONE, yes, only one, anything more than that is no longer fun) draft.. But the assessment part is crap.. and your effort not being recognized just because your students don't get A is crap.. I love the process.. I just hate the system..

But now that I'm 26, I just can't imagine myself being married..

I often think about what I'm doing in my life.. I think the best time in my life was when I was still studying.. I feel that I've somehow screwed up my life since I graduated.. Now I'm just passing time, waiting for my bond to finish.. Not that I'm going to quit, I haven't really decided.. But at least my options are open and I can make a choice.. You aim badly and miss them, they make fun of you (with equally vulgar terms)..

Recently, I've been going to this website where you can play mind games.. (Basically those intellectual board games that we play at Mind Cafe).. I thought people who play such games will be a bit more civilized.. but No! When they keep winning, they kick you out coz you're not good enough to play with them (SNOBS!).. When you win, they kick you out of the room and say that you're just too damn lucky (SORE LOSERS!).. Worse, after you leave the room, they continue to send you private msg to tell you what a lousy player you are... DUH..!!

What's wrong with you people??!! FOOLS!!

This is a video of the float (otherwise known as rag in NUS) done by the hall I used to stay in (Kent Ridge).. I didn't contribute to it, in fact, I didn't even know about it until I went to my friend's blog and saw this video.. but still, I'm freaking proud of it..!!! I feel so proud to see the hall flag being waved around..!!!

As I watch this video and feel all these emotions, after I just finally sent off my graduating batch of students with their A level results, I wonder to myself.. how many of my students will look back at AJC in future and feel the pride I'm feeling now.. Suppose an AJCian wins Campus Superstar.. even if it's someone they don't know, will they be proud of him/her coz he/she is an AJCian..? I guess only my students can answer this..

But I'm glad that I have always been proud of where I come from.. I proud of my alma matar (Hwachong), even though it is known was HCI now and not HCJC.. The logo has changed, the name has changed, but I'm still proud of it.. I go back every year for Mid-Autumn celebrations, I still remember the songs and mass dances.. When I go for A division sports competitions (supposingly to support AJC) and see the Hwachong flag being waved and the sea of supporters cheering, I can't help feeling proud of them.. When the Campus Superstar was won by a Hwachongian, I feel proud of him.. I even have friends who called in to vote for him..! Perhaps that's why he won.. Of course I don't deny that he sings quite well, but just being a Hwachongian has probably won him many votes from ex-hwachongians.. and that's what I call school spirit..

Had quite an eventful day today..

Went to gym for step class.. halfway through the class someone had fits.. quite scary.. we juz sat around and waited until the paramedics came.. then class was cancelled..

After that went JB with Yann Fang and Kian.. it was raining so we only stayed at City Square..

There were a lot of stalls selling new year goodies, so we went around sampling.. so many free samples, so happy.. ended up buying 2 boxes of mochi and 1 box of 'eight treasure nuts'..

Went to secret recipe to eat cake as usual.. hoho.. ordered 3 slices: White chocolate macadamia, chocolate banana and espresso cheese.. shiok..!

Went shopping.. Bought toiletries and make-up which was on sale.. Bought 2 pairs of shoes (and got a free membership card).. Went to watch Epic Movie.. stupid show, but it's only RM 10..! so still quite happy..

After the movie we went to eat again.. Ate the snow ice.. Not as nice as the Taiwan one, but definitely nicer than the one I had at some pasar malam in Singapore.. Ate a lot of snacks coz we were too full to eat a proper meal.. Tried the takoyaki, about same price as Singapore but bigger and more generous with the bonito flakes.. Went to the Shilin stall to eat the mee sua, tempura and pork floss crepe.. RM 5.50 each, slightly cheaper than Singapore..

So full and tired now..

Today I was asking my colleagues if they can remember their students' names yet.. Most can't even remember the faces.. They can only remember the students from their PD class.. I don't have a PD class, so I can't remember anyone, I guess that's forgivable..? heh.. But the horrors.. I'm so upset that I can't recognize my students..

I think during the old syllabus when we saw our students 3 times a week, it's easy to get to know the students.. but now we only see them twice a week, it gets a bit harder.. But I shall keep trying..

Anyway I decided to go check out my old students' blogs to see what they are doing (kaypoh.. =P).. and I came across this photo, taken at their prom (I assume)..

At first I didn't think much of it, I thought it was just my student and some of her friends (whom I don't know).. Then suddenly I recognize Kuan Chin.. And I was like, "Oh! Kuan Chin! Is this a coucil photo?".. Then I look closer at the girl on the left of Kuan Chin and was like, "OMG! Isn't that Cheng Wee?" Then I look to the right.."Kah Hoe..!!".. "Ah!! Joyce.. and Linda!!" Then it dawned on me that this was my PD class..!! Suddenly all the faces that I thought were strangers became familiar and I could recognize them.. They look so different..!! Especially Marianne (the rightmost girl in the front row).. OMG.. I can't get over it.. These are my students and I took like 5 min to realize that.. I mean, Qi Cai and his green specs.. How could I have not recognized it instantly..??

And I still can't figure out who's that girl between Linda and Hui Min.. I wrecked my brain to recall who were the remaining girls in my class.. Jasmine, Ying Tong, Abinaya, Hamizah... that's all wat.. I only have 11 girls.. But she doesn't look like any of them.. Oh well.. I give up..

Prom.. Wow.. I still remember my prom.. The moment when my class won the Best CT award.. haha.. Those were the good ol days.. =D

The winners!! =)

Yesterday went out with QSDP to celebrate Shuwen's bday..

We were supposed to meet for dinner at 7pm at Vivocity then go St James (free entry before 9pm).. But Uncle Leong was late, so we ended up going for dinner at almost 8pm and had to eat super fast.. We rushed over to St James and reached there before 9pm, only to find out that there was a bash going on..!!! So there was no free entry, and we had to buy the bash ticket for $15.. -_-.. So upsetting (especially on my stomach)..

Think we're getting old.. Coz we drank wine and left at 1am (while ppl were just coming).. haha.. Actually we left at 1am to go to Dragonfly.. But the queue was too long, so we ended up at Habourfront Macs, sat for a while (they were closing already) then went home le.. Too tired..

We made Shuwen drink quite a bit though.. She had all sorts of drinks.. beer, tequila pop, tequila shot, irish cowboy (some shot with baileys), wine.. She didn't want to drink wine coz she say she'll get drunk if she mixes wine with liquor.. So we were quite evil and mixed some wine into her shot while she was out making a phone call.. lol.. but dun think she realized..

This is why you should never drink anything that you have left unattended.. =P

When we just reached

Wine for old people.. =P

Getting smoky..

Today I had my first tutorial for the year..! (excluding H3).. Met one of my new JC1 class.. Quite fun.. Tomorrow will meet the other two classes..

Anywayz I have no PD class for the first intake.. hoho.. save me from a lot of admin.. so I'm quite happy.. But I'm super not used to standing in front for morning assembly.. Oh well.. Think most likely I'll get a PD class in the 2nd intake bah.. then I'll go back to standing at the back..

Even without PD, I'm like quite busy.. Mainly coz of H3 classes.. Evening classes twice a week.. So glad that my section is ending.. (2 more weeks and I finish Graph Theory).. But still need to set class assessment before that.. After that still need to prepare SDL material for plane geometry.. But I still think teaching H3 is not bad... coz I get to teach less H2 lectures, I dun need to be PD, and I have 1 less H2 class compared to the rest (for first intake only lah, but better than nothing).. Plus I get to teach something that I really like.. (rather teach H3 than to go for civics anytime =P)..

Hmm.. With all the H3 classes, I haven't had much chance to go gym.. Think I'll go gym more often after my graph theory finish.. yay.. can't wait for week 6..!

Then went for dinner with QSDP, waited SUPER long.. and the food was SUPER overpriced and not tasty.. At night play mahjong keep losing... SO SUAY!!!

Our clique totally condemn the place we had dinner at.. It's called zi4 ran2 jiu3 lou2 at Lengkok Bahru (yellow signboard).. Think english is called 'Zi Yean'..
A belated Christmas Greetings to all! hehe... Boxing day already...

I'm so tired.. Christmas eve, Wai Kit and Wai Ting (my sis's nephew and niece) came to my place.. they play and play and play.. waited for them to *finally* go to sleep before I could sleep.. next day early in the morning they were wide awake playing again and I had to wake up as well.. Anyway I'm amazed by the toys kids have to play these days.. Wai Kit had a remote control helicopter (which really can fly) and Wai Ting had this spray art pen thingy where you stick a marker in and press a button and the ink sprays out... then there was this controller that you can just plug directly into the TV and start playing some arcarde games.. No game console required.. amazing...

I was also busy preparing food for steamboat.. QSDP came my place on Christmas Day for our traditional steamboat gathering.. Then we had gift exchange.. I got this Victoria's Secret hand/body moisturiser that Linnet brought back from US.. It smells real good..! Everyone except Huili (who's in UK) turned up.. Trish and Linnet had to leave soon after lunch.. the rest of us played mahjong.. I won super a lot of 'money'..!!! Haha.. At night when only left with me, Uncle Leong and Suat, we played 3-people mahjong and I kept winning.. Before we could complete one cycle, Suat was totally bankrupt.. ahaha.. but we only played with chips la.. cheap thrill.. hehe... =D

Okayz.. I'm going to sleep.. Shall sleep until real late.. evening going to watch Death Note 2..!! hoho.. Last day of holidays.. Wed - Fri everyday have to go back to school for meetings.. >_<...
